We Make That Leap Into College Affordable
Below are the costs of the New Start Summer Program from Summer 2016.
Arizona residents* receive a significant reduction in tuition and fees for the program and recipients of summer Pell grants will have all of their program costs covered. Please do not allow the costs of the program to be a factor in deciding whether or not to attend. There are a number of financial aid options students can qualify for if New Start represents a significant financial burden.
|Full Cost||AZ Resident* with completed FAFSAs||AZ Resident with completed FAFSAs - living off campus||Summer Pell Grant recipient (regardless of residency)|
|Tuition (6 units)**||$2,466||$790||$790||$0|
|Total (7 units)***||$4,864||$1,593||$1,293||$0|
* Students who do not live in Arizona but who are enrolled members of federally recognized Arizona Native tribes may be eligible for resident tuition at the University of Arizona. Students establishing resident tuition through the Residency Classification Office through this policy are also entitled to resident costs for New Start.
** This is based on Summer 2016 tuition. Tuition and fees have not yet been set for Summer 2017 and so these amounts may change.
*** Students taking Math 100 are also assessed an $80 course fee. This fee is not discounted for Arizona residents, but it is covered by the Pell Promise.
New Start Summer Program Fees
The costs above do not include personal expenses, like meals or parking, or for books for your classes. You will need to budget for those separately.
Tuition for Summer 2017
The costs above are based on tuition from the Summer 2016 term. Tuition for Summer 2018 has not yet been set; therefore, the total costs above may be slightly higher for 2018.
When and where do I need to pay?
You do not need to send any money now. All charges related to New Start will be posted to your University Bursar’s account close to the beginning of the program. Charges not covered by financial aid will need to be paid prior to the start of the program and according to the due date listed on your account. Students can view their Bursar's account in their UAccess Student Center at www.uaccess.arizona.edu.
The New Start Summer Program refunds charges in full for students who complete the Contract Cancellation form online by June 1, 2018. Students who cancel after this deadline, including those who qualify for the Pell grant, will be responsible for the program fee and, if applicable, the residence hall fee. Students who withdraw after the program begins will be responsible for all program and tuition-related fees and may have their financial aid package reduced or rescinded in compliance with Federal financial aid laws.
Please note: Informing the Office of Admissions to cancel your UA admission or contacting our office by phone will not be sufficient to receive a refund. You must complete the Contract Cancellation form.
All New Start participants seeking resident New Start tuition and fees or who want to be considered for the Pell grant or other New Start financial aid are required to complete both the 2017-2018 and the 2018-2019 FAFSAs.
- Your financial aid eligibility for New Start is determined by the 2017-2018 FAFSA
- Your financial aid eligibility for the Fall semester is determined by the 2018-2019 FAFSA
- Both must be completed to be eligible for the aid
The financial aid package you receive for New Start will not impact your eligibility or aid amount for the Fall. Applying for financial aid is free using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The University of Arizona school code is 00108300.
In order to ensure that you receive your financial aid in a timely manner, please complete both FAFSAs by March 1, 2018. If it is already past March 1, please complete your FAFSAs immediately and no later than May 15, 2018.
Our Pell Promise (Based on the 2017-2018 FAFSA)
In an effort to keep New Start affordable for all families, all students who qualify for any level of federal Pell grant assistance will be able to attend the program using only their federal Pell grant.
- If your Pell award is less than what is required to pay your New Start tuition and fees, the New Start Summer Program office will provide a waiver to cover your remaining balance.
- If you receive a Pell award more than the New Start tuition and fees, the remaining money available will be refunded to you after the first week of the program.
In order to qualify for the Pell Promise, you must complete the 2017-2018 FAFSA and be Pell eligible when taking 6-7 units. You will be eligible for a summer Pell grant if your Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) from the 2017-2018 FAFSA is 4700 or less. Pell Promise does NOT cover books or personal expenses like meals or parking, so you will need to budget to cover these expenses.
New Start Friends and Alumni Scholarships
For students who do not meet Pell eligibility but still have need for financial assistance, we have the New Start Friends and Alumni Scholarships. Funded by private donors and community grants, these scholarships can pay up to the total costs of New Start. To be eligible, you must have completed both 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 FAFSAs and have not qualified for a summer Pell grant. Applications for the New Start Friends and Alumni Scholarship open in March.
