A Day in the Life of New Start

Monday through Friday, class begins at 7:30am.  Yes, we know it's early, but in order to provide all of the academic support and social programs, we need to start early! Class ends at 12:15 Monday through Thursday and at 1:30 on Friday.

New Start offers tutoring for all classes from 1-5pm Monday through Thursday and also from 3-7pm on Sunday.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, New Start offers Hall Programs in the residence hall at 5pm.  These programs are open to all students in New Start regardless of whether you live in the residence hall!

New Start also collaborates with departments across campus to offer college-specific programs as well as additional extracurricular opportunities.  Examples of these programs include the Lunch and Learn series offered by the College of Engineering, the Research Careers in Science colloquium offered by the College of Science, and the Be Well wellness series offered by Campus Rec.  These are scheduled throughout the program dates but are always between 12:30 and 5pm so that they do not interfere with New Start class time.

Your New Start Courses

The New Start Summer Program administration places students into their general education course with consideration of the following factors: major, math and English placement scores, earned AP/dual enrollment credits, and number of spaces available in each course. In addition to this class, all students are required to enroll in EDL 297A: Topics in Leadership.  This course helps students develop the personal and interpersonal skills necessary to be successful in academic and professional settings.  All students are required to enroll in at least 6 units of coursework in order to participate in New Start.

Attendance

New Start is fast-paced. You may miss only 2 full days of class during the six-week program. If you are planning a trip that conflicts with the scheduled class days, please do not plan on attending New Start. There are no “excused” absences in New Start. If you miss too many days, you may be dismissed from the program and fail your enrolled courses. No fees are refunded for any student who voluntarily withdraws or is asked to leave, and financial aid and fee waivers may be adjusted/reduced accordingly.
